Wigmore’s Ignite Ensemble (improv and outreach)
The Ignite Ensemble is Wigmore Hall’s improvisation and outreach group. It is comprised of professional musicians from a rich variety of musical backgrounds. Ignite mixes up jazz, Indian music, contemporary western and free improv for a totally unique sound, which we take to the community through our education work at special needs schools or anywhere that can benefit from the Ignite experience.
Wigmore regularly commissions one-page scores for us from eminent composers (including Steven Hough, Amjad Ali Khan, Stephen Walbeck, Jackie Walduck, Param Vir, Jason Yarde, Martin Butler, Peter Wiegold and Luke Bedford). We perform these in our concerts and once a year on the Wigmore stage. (One-page scores are ‘skeleton scores’, or ‘inspiring motives’, which allow scope for the ensemble to expand and make into a full piece).
Ignite leads Wigmore’s outreach programme, bringing music workshops and projects to special environments such as hospital schools, special needs institutes, centres for disadvantaged people. In May 2014, Ignite will be expanding their operations beyond London for the first time by leading a music workshop project at Derwen College in Shropshire as part of the Whittington International Chamber Music Festival, and performing as part of the festival.
Ignite is available to be booked for festivals – for a series of workshops culminating in a concert shared between Ignite and the workshop participants – or for anywhere that might benefit from Ignite’s huge education and broad music experience – something quite unique. Please contact for a quote, or visit the Ignite website for more info.
